Because of its slightly calming effects, American skullcap has been used as the main component in a variety of medicinal tonics. It has been used for over two hundred years as a mild relaxant that affects the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. It has also been used in therapy for anxiety, nervous tension, hysteria, and convulsions and is currently used in connection with symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), stress-related headaches, anorexia nervosa, and insomnia.
Today skullcap is commonly used in connection with anxiety, nervous tension, muscle spasms, PMS-related symptoms, tension headaches, restless legs syndrome, insomnia, and mild Tourette's syndrome.
Native to Europe, wood betony is now planted in many parts of the world with temperate climates. The primary portions of the plant that are used as medicine are the leaves and flowers, though historically the root has also been used. Betony is still used by herbal practitioners, though for a much more limited set of maladies. Current use of the dried herb of Betony involves the use as a remedy for chronic headaches and to treat anxiety and nervousness, betony is best known as a traditional remedy for tension headaches. It is a bitter digestive tonic and helpful in a wide range of anxiety related conditions.
